At Bassett House, 2017 marks 70 years of educating young children to achieve their very best. The school’s founder, Sylvia Rentoul, recognised children as individuals, and encouraged them to express themselves, helping to grow their achievements and self-confidence.
Focused attention remains our hallmark. We believe tailor-made teaching opens up young minds to endless possibilities, encouraging them to think creatively. We start by ensuring high staff-to-pupil ratios and many specialist teaching staff. Our teachers know every child in their care inside out and use great teaching supported by our excellent equipment (including cutting-edge IT) to bring lessons to life for each child. Our 'sport for all' ethos encourages all our children to think of themselves as athletes, while allowing our sporting stars to shine. We offer football, netball, tag rugby, hockey, tennis, rounders, athletics, gymnastics and eurhythmics as part of the core curriculum and clubs in swimming, fencing, yoga and dance.
We don't stop there. Vibrant music and drama give our children a passion for participation and performance, fostering a sense of achievement and boosting self-confidence. Our children first take to the stage from age 3 and have many opportunities to shine throughout life at Bassett House, whether in whole-school assemblies, stage shows or concerts. We have choirs, musical ensembles and an orchestra and provide individual instrumental music lessons from specialist music teachers.
Our extra-curricular clubs, together with our weekly enrichment hour, expand our children’s horizons beyond the core curriculum. Each term children can choose to add a variety of activities to the school day, be it Lego modelling, computer coding, Scottish dancing, origami, chess, geography, cookery, arts and crafts or Zumba.
Residential trips from year 3 onwards create a sense of adventure and build self-reliance. The glow of a 7 year-old’s face recounting a nighttime bug-hunting expedition, a 9 year-old’s thrill at working with a friend to sail a dinghy, or a 10 year-old embracing the challenge of sleeping out under a self-made shelter: we create these memorable moments, knowing that their positive effects will last a lifetime.
All of this makes not only for well-rounded individuals, it translates into excellent academic results. When they leave aged 11, Bassett House children are ready to thrive at London’s best senior schools. And they do: our children win places to the cream of London’s senior schools. For those who want to board, Bassett House prepares them well for life at leading boarding schools.
We collaborate closely with our sister schools, Orchard House and Prospect House, sparking off new ideas to promote ever more successful teaching practices. The three schools share a common ethos but each retains its unique personality.
The schools (brought together under the umbrella of House Schools Group) are proudly non-selective. True to our belief, children are not tested and judged at the tender age of 3 or 4 years. Our outstanding results repeatedly show all children can fulfil their potential, regardless of early learning ability. We encourage our high fliers to skyrocket, whilst children who need a little extra help are given the support they need to reach their fullest potential.
Our last full ISI inspection awarded us 'excellent' and 'outstanding' in all areas and we flew through our 2016 compliance inspection.
This year, as we celebrate our 70th birthday, we look forward to another year of stellar success in education.
