Heathside is a small and friendly day school, housed in three historic buildings a few minutes' walk from a beautiful meadow on Hampstead Heath, where the children play every lunchtime.
The school is a unique and highly successful learning environment, rated 'Outstanding' in all seven areas by Ofsted. With talented and inspirational teachers and a strong focus on individual learning and pastoral care, our students flourish:
"One of the most significant features of the school is the happy atmosphere evident in all classes… From a very young age, children develop a real thirst and enthusiasm for learning and this continues throughout the school… Pupils are kind and courteous to one another and relate to adults extremely well… They are highly motivated to learn, enjoy school and embrace all aspects of school life… They have high levels of confidence and self-esteem… The quality of pupils' work is exceptional."
We encourage the development of the whole person and, as a result, Heathside is a relaxed and happy place and academic standards are high. We have a proud tradition of tailoring our teaching so that every child gets the best from each lesson – a high staff-to-student ratio, a focus on small-group work and individual attention allow us to offer challenge and support as appropriate:
"The headteacher is an inspirational leader… who leads a dynamic team of highly qualified staff, all of whom share her vision in providing education of the highest standard… The quality of teaching is outstanding… Teachers have exceptional subject knowledge and are keen and enthusiastic in their approach to teaching… Lessons are extremely well planned… Teaching is adapted to meet the differing learning needs and styles of all pupils… Pupils consistently remain engaged, enthused and interested…"
The curriculum builds strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, scientific understanding and creative thinking:
"The quality of the curriculum is outstanding and this results in pupils' outstanding levels of achievement. The richness, breadth and diversity of the curriculum enable pupils to develop an extensive range of knowledge and skills… The school's extra-curricular activities are strengths of the school and the programme has an exceptional impact in supporting pupils' learning."
We produce highly able mathematicians and lifelong readers and writers. We playfully bring out the artist in everyone. Every child in the school learns French from a native speaker, and we offer lessons in Spanish, Mandarin, German and Italian. Music and drama are particular strengths, and everyone performs several times a year. We play a wide range of sports to high standards. Everyone from Reception up plays chess, and we have been national chess champions many times. Extra-curricular activities range from Capoeira and Chinese to our popular Write-and-Recite and Philosophy Clubs.
We teach outdoors when we can. We have lots of inspirational visitors and enriching trips. We look after each other. We live and learn well. When it snows, we build snowmen and go tobogganing on Hampstead Heath.
"The success of the current Year 6 pupils in gaining scholarships and entry into a range of highly respected London independent schools reflects the outstanding achievements pupils make within the school."
Most children join us in the Nursery, which can take children from two years of age. We do have occasional places in other years. It is never too early to register for a place, which you can do from our website. At the right time, your child will be invited to spend a morning with us. We do have waiting lists and we give priority to Heathside siblings; we strive to keep you well informed about the availability of places.
If you would like to find out more, please arrange a visit to get to know the school.
