St. Winefride's School is situated in Belmont close to the Town Centre and was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1868.
St Winefride's provides a secure and happy environment in which children thrive and achieve. The day is filled with interesting and motivating activities designed to stimulate and inspire, as well as to instil a love of learning in the child that will last a lifetime.
Teaching is led by a committed and efficient staff team and children are taught to a high standard. Since 2011 St. Winefride's has been placed in Sunday Times 'best schools guide', in the top 100 schools in the UK and this year was placed 27th. However, the cultural and recreational activities necessary for a child's development are blended into the days' timetable.
The sound of music both vocal and instrumental can be heard daily, dance, ballet, drama, all play an important part in the life of the school. Music lessons are offered in brass, piano, wind, string and percussion. Pupils have achieved grades in music to G5.
The choir and brass ensemble combined to make an excellent CD in December 'Christmas at St. Winefride's'.
Gymnastics is taught to a high level by a highly skilled teacher. The A Team takes part in competitions and gains top places for both team and individual entries in the ISA National championships.
The school has a multi sports programme which includes football, cricket, hockey, tennis, netball, cross country, athletics, chess and karate. The children play in tournaments and matches with other schools. This year the girls football team will play in the County Finals in May.
Swimming takes place in the Quarry Swimming Pool.
Pupils are prepared to take entrance examinations and scholarships to Independent and grammar schools. The success rate is high.
