Stonyhurst St Mary's Hall is the Preparatory School of Stonyhurst College, providing the first steps in a seamless education from age 3 to 18. We are a Roman Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition offering an excellent education for boarders and day pupils alike. The Prep school is housed in its own buildings on the same site as the senior school with which it shares several facilities.

Stonyhurst St Mary's Hall is a place of enthusiastic learning, achievement and energy, with a genuine sense of family. We have a highly personalised approach to the children's learning following the International Primary Curriculum up to the age of 11. At 11+ the Stonyhurst College HODs take responsibility for the academic programme which means that the children benefit from the leadership, development and pastoral support of a Prep School system but with the academic stretch that comes with being taught by secondary subject specialists. Bringing to life their learning in class, teachers and children have access to the artefacts and curator expertise of the oldest museum in the English speaking world, the Stonyhurst Collections. The museum contains over 50,000 objects and books, including a wide and rich collection of Natural History pieces, a first folio by William Shakespeare and a prayer book that was once the property of Mary, Queen of Scots.

The school is proud of its strong sporting tradition with high levels of performance in traditional sports, cross country and swimming. This year Tennis goes under cover with the opening of our new Tennis Dome run to LTA standards. Drama is another area offering creative excellence across the school which engages, stretches and inspires young people. Investment this year continues in the creation of a performing arts 'Drama and Music Hub'. Other excellent facilities include a new science lab, an art studio, a swimming pool, sports hall and a theatre, in which all children have their drama lessons.

Boarders

We offer an outstanding boarding experience and sense of belonging. Our boarders are cared for by houseparent's, who are supported by an enthusiastic and caring team. At Stonyhurst St Mary Hall, boarders can be as young as eight. Operating very much on a family basis, the children enjoy exciting weekend trips, many clubs and activities and love to play in the school's extensive grounds and beautiful surroundings.

Pre Prep - For children aged 3 to 7

Welcoming children from the age of three, Hodder House is our purpose built, award-winning pre-prep unit at St Mary’s Hall. Set in beautiful surroundings and equipped with exceptional facilities from the latest iPads to a unique woodland classroom, it is the ideal environment for indoor/outdoor play and learning. Children work in small classes under the care and guidance of highly skilled and experienced early years' teachers. In addition to literacy, numeracy, science and ICT, children learn modern languages, enjoy the arts, PE and swimming.

Stonyhurst St Mary's Hall is a very safe, nurturing, vibrant and warm hearted child centered environment within a beautiful and extensive rural location approx. an hour from Manchester, two hours from London by train and 40 minutes from Preston. The school prides itself on being creative and innovative with a genuine ambition for each individual. We successfully blend high performance with opportunity and engagement for the less confident by being challenging yet supporting in equal measures.
