Mayfield School is celebrating another year of exceptional A level and Pre-U results, with girls securing places at top universities including Oxford, LSE, Durham, Edinburgh and Bristol to study a wide range of subjects encompassing Mathematics, Medicine, Engineering, Architecture and Music.

Impressive results were achieved across the board with over one-third of all girls awarded three or more A*/A grades. Over 20% of all entries were awarded A* grade; 63% were graded A*/A (the highest ever result for the School at this level) and 84% were graded A*/B. Once again, eleven subjects achieved 100% A*/B. Mathematics remained the most popular A level subject with almost 30% securing the top A* grade and almost 80% A*/A. Mayfield’s strong reputation for creativity is reflected in the consistent success of its Pre-U Creative Arts candidates, with 100% achieving a Distinction, the top grading level.

There are a number of outstanding individual performances including:

Former Head Girl Becca from Mayfield (A*AA) is delighted to be taking up her place at LSE to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics, whilst twin sister Naomi (A*A*A) is off to King’s to study Mathematics and Philosophy.

Lucia from Slovakia (AAAA) is excited to be heading to Jesus College, Oxford to study Music. The worthy recipient of a prestigious Oxford Organ Scholarship, Lucia (who has performed in Westminster Abbey and Westminster Cathedral) was also awarded a top Distinction in Grade 8 Organ, which she prepared for and took at the same time as her A Levels.

Ella from Etchingham (A*AA) has secured a place at Bristol to study Medicine, whilst Emily from Wadhurst (A*A*A), whose older sister also attended Mayfield and has just been awarded a First in Chemistry from Durham, will be studying Biomedical Sciences at Warwick. Emily’s result is especially impressive given the significant disruption caused to her A Level studies by a lengthy hospitalisation. Funmi from London (A*AA), a shotput county champion, is looking forward to her degree course in Chemical Engineering and Management at Loughborough, whilst Emily from Tunbridge Wells

(A*A*AA) is awaiting confirmation of her place at Trinity College Dublin to read Geography and Economics.

Headmistress Antonia Beary comments:

"I am thrilled that our girls have achieved such impressive A Level and Pre-U results, particularly in the current climate of uncertainty over grades and the confusion associated with the new examination system. It is a testament to Mayfield’s diversity that every department has achieved excellent results and the girls performed equally well in every subject, from Geography to Ceramics and Drama to Maths. The results reflect the rounded nature of a Mayfield education as many girls continue to balance arts and sciences at A Level maintaining a high standard across the board; this confirms the importance and benefits of transferring the creativity and independent thinking required in creative and performing arts across all their subjects. Each girl follows a tailored and personalised course in the Sixth Form, which means that she is able to build on her strengths and emerge as a confident individual. I am delighted that so many girls go on to follow such interesting and varied career paths: this is a reflection not only of their hard work and the calibre of teaching they receive, but just as importantly to the quality of the pastoral care, guidance and the aspirational nature of the community at Mayfield. I wish them continued success as they go on to enjoy undergraduate life: I am confident that they have had the best possible preparation at Mayfield."
