Duncombe School is an “Outstanding” co-educational school that welcomes pupils aged between 2-11 years in leafy Bengeo, Hertford.
We are Hertford’s only co-educational independent nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep school that welcomes children between the ages of 2 and 11 years. In 2014 we were extremely delighted to be awarded a School Inspection Service report of “Outstanding” for our excellent provision across each of the seven categories, together with a rating of “Outstanding” in all areas for our Early Years Foundation Stage.
We strive to provide a vibrant and happy environment where pupils feel safe and secure, but are willing to be challenged and stretched. We offer innovative, creative and personalised lessons to nurture a passion for learning in our pupils. The wide and varied curriculum includes two modern foreign languages, music, sports, history, art, religious education and geography, as well as the fundamentals of English, Mathematics and Science, alongside study skills to prepare children for their journey to secondary school.
The school is housed in a large Palladian-style mansion house nestled within four acres in leafy Bengeo, just outside Hertford. The Main School building houses Years 1 to 6, while the Early Kindergarten to Reception children spend their day in a large purpose-built Early Years facility within the school grounds, known as Treetops Pre-school. Duncombe is an accredited Forest School, offering outdoor education and activities in our own purpose-built Forest School area.
In 2012 Duncombe opened a music and dance studio on site. During the day the studio comes alive with the sound of music lessons of all year groups and choir practice. After school the room takes on a different purpose, becoming the home to after school dance activities such as tap, ballet and street dance.
With an all-weather floodlit Astroturf pitch and 75m athletics track, we are able to encourage our children in sporting activities all year round. We also take part in competitions and tournaments with other schools in sports such as football, netball and hockey to name a few.
We are proud of our close links with the community and benefit from local amenities including the Hartham Common Leisure centre for swimming, Bengeo Cricket Club and Haileybury School for various sporting events.
We know how difficult it can be to juggle work and family, so that’s why we offer flexible wrap around care with breakfast club from 7.30am and after school activities which run every day until 6.30pm. Our holiday clubs run from 8.00am – 6.30pm during most of the school holidays, meaning that your children are cared for and stimulated for 48 weeks of the year. After school activities are wide ranging, including gymnastics, cheerleading, construction chess, fencing, cookery, crime lab and self-defence.
