Fun and frolics at King’s Ely have raised a record-breaking £1650 to help support poverty-stricken children and families in East Africa.

Hundreds of students, staff, families and friends of King’s Ely came together on New Field after school on April 20th for Osfest – an annual fundraising extravaganza organised by students in Osmond House.

The event was blessed with glorious sunshine this year and there were a whole host of activities and attractions on offer, including bouncy castles, a house tug-of-war competition, a coconut shy, sports challenges, ‘sponge the teacher’, face painting, music, an ice cream van and a wide variety of stalls and raffles. All funds raised were in aid of Osmond House’s chosen charity of the year, Hope4Malawi.

Housemaster of Osmond House, Paul Lott, said: ‘Each “Osman” was tasked with running a stall at this traditional summer fete. It was fantastic to see so many happy, smiley faces and each Osman using his talents to work as a team to put on such a huge event that was wonderfully attended. I am thankful for the generosity of pupils, parents and the wider school community in helping to raise such a large sum of money for such a worthwhile cause.’

Malawi is one of the world’s least developed countries. Four thousand children die every day from diseases caused by unsafe water and sanitation; mainly from diarrhoeal diseases like cholera and dysentery. 75% of the population earn less than $2 a day and more than 10% of the population regularly go short of food.

Since 2008, Hope4Malawi has been involved with projects in rural villages, schools and orphanages by raising funds and helping implement the projects during trips to Malawi. These projects have included providing a kitchen and library for Mpemba School, a library and classroom block at Chipepwete School, and a feeding programme for the 1800 children at Mpemba School, to name just a few.
