All Fifth Form (S4) boys at Merchiston Castle School completed a 24-hour Charity Cycle on Tuesday, covering 4,788 km. The boys’ target was to cycle to the Philippines, as a tribute to their Housemaster, Philip Rossiter – ‘get Phil to the Philippines’ was the motivational tag line for their efforts.

Every member of the boarding house, aged 15-16, took part in the Charity Cycle, cycling for a minimum of six half hour slots on one of eight spin bikes in the marquee. Other members of the School community took part throughout the night, including the School’s Chaplain, members of staff and parents.

David Blair, Assistant Housemaster of the Boarding House, and Assistant Director of Rugby at Merchiston, comments: “The boys have put in an unbelievable shift over the last 24 hours and I have been very proud of the way they have worked together and encouraged each other through the night and into the early hours of the morning.”

The boys are raising money for Joshua Nolan Foundation and Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre, Lothian. Fundraising for this event is ongoing, and the team hopes to mimic last year’s staggering £3,000.

Merchiston Castle School is a boarding and day school for boys aged 7-18, in Edinburgh Colinton.
