King's Ely Junior students shone in this year’s Oxford German Olympiad.

Year 6 Modern Foreign Language pupils took part in the competition – which is held every year and sees schools from across the country participating. The Oxford German Network calls all young learners of German to enter the competition and the theme this year was ‘Deutsch(e) jenseits von Deutschland’ – ‘German(s) beyond Germany’.

Taking German and Germany as an example, students were asked to reflect on the way in which people have always migrated and taken their languages and stories with them, and on how languages and cultures are almost never confined to one geographical area or a single nation. There were more than 550 entries submitted by over 750 pupils from 97 schools across the UK.

Ellie Grimsey and Sydney Smith, both aged 11, won the Years 5-6 ‘Design a Menu’ category and Lin Wei (Helen) Li, 11, was a runner-up in the category. Helen was also awarded highly commended in the ‘Draw a Comic Strip’ category. The girls received their prizes at an awards ceremony held at the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

The following King’s Ely Junior pupils were also commended for their participation and awarded certificates – Callum Cook, Matthew Jackson, Rufus Hillier, Chloe Skoulding, Lola Phillips and Aron O’Connor.

Head of King’s Ely Junior, Richard Whymark, said: “The children worked very hard on their pieces for the competition and it was great to see them rewarded with prizes at the prestigious venue in Oxford.”

King's Ely Junior is a co-educational independent day and boarding school for pupils aged 7-13.
