Black History Month 2025: Standing Firm in Power and Pride

This October, Chigwell School celebrated Black History Month under the theme “Standing Firm in Power and Pride.” A powerful assembly led by our Equality Ambassadors honoured figures such as Septimius Severus, Mary Prince, Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock, and Tessa Sanderson, and concluded with a recital of Colour Blind by Lemn Sissay.

Throughout the school, flags from African and Caribbean nations decorated the dining hall, themed lunches were served, and the library featured books and short films on Black historical figures, including Mary Prince and Walter Tull.

During tutor time and Drop Everything and Read sessions, pupils explored leadership, activism, and identity through presentations and readings from Black and British by David Olusoga.

In lessons, pupils also learned about pioneers such as Dr George Carruthers in Physics, Henrietta Lacks in Biology, and May Ayim in German, while English, Art, and Politics also explored Black voices and history.

Staff also attended the African Caribbean Education Network’s 5th Anniversary Conference at Eton College, focusing on racial inclusion in education.

Reflecting on the month, Miss Ochana said, “Black History Month is a vital reminder that Black history is British history. Our commitment is to nurture a school culture where every student feels seen, heard, and proud of their heritage - all year round.”
