In the week that author Jacqueline Wilson launches her new book The Runaway Girls, two pupils from Burgess Hill Girls were invited to visit her Sussex home for an exclusive interview.

To win the chance to interview the author, pupils at Burgess Hill Girls were asked to submit a short review of their favourite Jacqueline Wilson book. The winners were Amber Holness and Sankavi Rajarajan with their reviews of Dancing the Charleston and Little Darlings.

To conduct the interview the girls were invited to visit Jacqueline’s home in East Sussex. During the interview, Jacqueline shared early childhood memories and revealed her favourite characters from her books are Hetty Feather and Tracy Beaker. She also confessed a fondness for hazelnut ice cream with whipped cream on top.

The girls were excited to meet their favourite author. Sankavi said: “It was a really fun day and an amazing opportunity to meet Jacqueline Wilson.”

Amber added: “My favourite part was seeing what it was like to do an interview and also meeting Jacqueline.”

Jacqueline also enjoyed meeting the girls: “It was a delight to meet two such interesting and intelligent girls. If I had a grand-daughter I’d want her to be educated at Burgess Hill Girls.”

Burgess Hill Girls Head of Prep Heather Cavanagh was thrilled for the students to have such a unique opportunity: “Jacqueline Wilson’s books are immensely popular at Burgess Hill Girls, so this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for Amber and Sankavi. It was so kind of Jacqueline to invite the girls into her home and make them feel so welcome. I am sure it is an experience that they will never forget.”

You can watch the full interview, which includes Jacqueline reading from The Runaway Girls, on the Burgess Hill Girls website.
