'Extreme Reading' as Barrow Hills School extends World Book Day to a week

Not content to just celebrate World Book Day, Barrow Hills School in Surrey went the extra mile and created its very own dedicated Book Week to promote and encourage the enjoyment of books and reading across all year groups.

Book Week began on Monday, February 27 and included a number of exciting initiatives. These included an Extreme Reading Competition, where children were required to submit photos of themselves reading in a strange or unusual place. Back to School Bedtime Story involved children in Years 3-8 returning to school in their pyjamas and dressing gowns (teddies were optional) to enjoy a bedtime story with a delicious cup of hot chocolate. Children in Reception and Years 1 and 2 changed into their pyjamas and had their story at the end of the school day. The week’s events culminated in World Book Day (Thursday 2nd March) when each child was invited to dress up as their favourite book character.

Children participating in the World Book Day event were asked to bring a book into school (of any genre), for donation to the Barrow Hills School library.

Commenting on the Book Week, Headmaster Sean Skehan said: “Reading is clearly an integral aspect of a child’s learning journey and we embrace any initiative which helps to encourage our children’s appreciation of books. In a world dominated by technology and screens reading is more important than ever as a way for children to relax.”
