Felsted’s Gus speeds to victory

Felsted School Racer Gus, aged 17 from Kelvedon, celebrated victory in the televised Ginetta GT4 SuperCup race last Sunday, after taking another podium earlier in the day.

Starting P4 on the reverse grid of pro-category drivers, Gus quickly assumed P2 with the fastest lap time and bode his time to make a move on the race leader with 3 laps to go.

When asked by the ITV commentator to explain his move to secure the win, he said, “I just assessed the race leader’s pace and race lines over many laps of following him. I just thought to myself that I am going to hate myself if I finish second, so I calculated my overtake move and knew I could pull it off”.

It was a bitter sweet weekend for this young driver in his maiden season in senior racing, as his first race finished prematurely when he sustained car damage. This incident, coupled with another similar incident at Thruxton has dented Gus’ push for the championship title.

However, with 14 podiums from 15 races completed, the Felsted pupil is flying high and relishing the challenge of repeating last Sunday’s feat for the season finale at the world famous Brands Hatch circuit on 14/15 November.

Gus proudly displayed the Sparkle Foundation charity logos on his car, suit and mask to raise awareness of the plight of vulnerable young children in Malawi, Africa and to promote its Sponsor A Child initiative. Gus spent his half term this time last year at the Sparkle School to see the completion of classrooms which were built with the help of the funds he has raised from sponsors through his racing.
