Froebelian School founder commemorated

Pupils at The Froebelian School in Horsforth made their annual visit to Horsforth Cemetery this week to commemorate the death of founder of the school, Miss Mary Louise Hoe.

Miss Hoe opened the doors of The Froebelian School in 1913 at 11 Riseholme Terrace (known today as 59 New Road Side) for just 10 pupils.

This was no mean feat, as her relation Valery Dyas said: “A girl born into her situation would have had ahead of her usual prospect – marriage motherhood. However, Mary wanted more from life.”

Over 100 years later and now with over 180 pupils, the school continues to uphold the traditional values of 100 years ago, whilst also keeping up to date with modern educational approaches and advances in technology.

In remembrance, the School Captains placed a bouquet of red roses at Miss Hoe’s grave at Horsforth Cemetery.
