Fun-filled term of events and activities for Headington School!

Pupils at Headington School have enjoyed a busy term of fun and engaging activities. Here's a glimpse of some of the things they've got up to!

Camping Experience

Last week, Year 6 gathered up their roll mats and sleeping bags and ventured over to the Senior School where they spent a night camping in the beautiful gardens of Davenport.

Immersed in the woodland, the girls enjoyed activities such as shelter building, wood whittling, fire making and much more. It was wonderful to see Year 6 embrace the nature around them and, luckily, the rain held off long enough to enjoy a wonderful BBQ in the evening.

The girls were responsible for constructing their own tents (all of which survived the night!) before relaxing around a campfire, singing songs and telling ghost stories. It was a wonderful celebration as our Year 6's come to the end of their time at the Prep School.

Scientists Get Forensic

Upper Five forensic scientists came in for a fun morning in Biology after finishing their assessments in June to help to convict a criminal. A (fictional) young lab technician, Mrs Hummingbird, was found dead early in the morning and three suspects had been arrested. The suspects all had a motive, which meant the young scientists had to use their experimental skills to narrow down the list.

Thankfully, some tissue, DNA and urine samples were left at the murder scene and they were able to take samples from the suspects as a reference.

Biology teacher Mrs Victoria Vaccaro said: "It was a great opportunity for the pupils to explore some of the techniques they will be studying in Sixth Form and the teachers had a lot of fun preparing the ketchup-splattered murder scene."

Muck, Mess and Mixtures

Year 2 enjoyed a Marvellous Messy Monday where they had the opportunity to play and experiment with a variety of materials, discovering what happened when they were mixed together!

The girls arrived, ready for action, in old clothes that didn't matter if they got mucky, and they even used their feet to explore some of the messy activities. Having taken over the Science Lab for the afternoon, we made slime, mixed jelly with shaving foam, (cooked) spaghetti with paint and investigated what happens when vinegar and baking soda are combined.

The session stimulated lots of questions and interesting observations and provided the opportunity to collaborate in teams. The girls all agreed it was a fantastic introduction to our topic, Muck, Mess and Mixtures, and was definitely worth the mess and clearing up!

Punting Fun for Sixth Formers

Headmistress Caroline Jordan, heading up a crack regiment of staff puntsmen and women, spent a wonderful afternoon on the river with the L6 last week on Wednesday 30th June.

This was a most enjoyable event, despite the unexpected competition on the water from a crew of rogue Magdalen College School rowers.

Some very skilled manoeuvres were observed, not least from Mr James Stephenson, who graciously towed three student boats back to the bank single-handedly.

Meanwhile, Headington’s Sport Prefect made quite a splash after being cruelly separated from her punt by a bridge!

This was the prelude to more end-of-term celebrations for the year group, with a quiz and barbecue to mark the end of the penultimate week of term.
