Mixing it up: Hazlegrove Prep School children are drawing on their memories of their time at the school to create a quilt to enter into the International Quilting Competition as part of their DT work.

This year is proving to be a very exciting one already in the Design Technology department of Hazlegrove Prep School as the children get going on a range of projects. The newly formed Textiles Club is entering the International Quilting competition where the finished piece of work will be hung at the NEC, Birmingham. The head of DT, Mrs Bonnie Barton, said, ‘The theme of the competition is “Memories” and will be made up of old Hazlegrove uniforms and clothing worn by the children. The children will design their own embroidery images using industry standard software and embroider it using our new computer-aided embroidery machine! Each of the patches will be embroidered with children's own memories of their time at Hazlegrove. I think it will look fantastic.’

Bonnie adds, 'In DT at Hazlegrove we pride ourselves on providing children with a modern curriculum at the cutting edge of technological advances, but we also appreciate that traditional practical skills are valuable and that the tangible nature of the subject can be hugely rewarding. The children have been given the opportunity to work on a range of woodwork-based projects in the workshop, supported by our fantastic new technician, Mr Wivell. Prior to joining the DT department at Hazlegrove in August, Mr Wivell worked at Poisdales as a bespoke cabinet maker and has made furniture for the likes of Ant McPartlin and the Queen of Jordan! The children are thoroughly enjoying his supremely knowledgeable input into their projects and are already planning a range of items, some of which include outdoor seating, coffee tables, puzzles and rocking toys for Pre-Prep.’
