King’s Ely welcomes students and staff from Gymnasium Remchingen in Germany

Thirteen students and two teachers from Gymnasium Remchingen school in Germany enjoyed an action-packed exchange visit to King’s Ely.

It was the German school’s first-ever visit to a British school after years of searching, and to say the international visitors got to soak up the sights and sounds of King’s Ely, and the rich culture of the local area, would be an understatement. The special guests also enjoyed a trip to the beach at Hunstanton in Norfolk and visits to Cambridge and London.

The head of German at King’s Ely Senior, Neil Urwin, who organised the exchange visit, said: ‘Our German visitors were amazed by King’s Ely and everything that the school has to offer, and thoroughly enjoyed the cathedral services they attended. We are hoping that this will become a long-lasting partnership and that many of our own students will benefit from the experience of spending some time in Germany, improving their language skills and learning more about the culture of their beautiful country. Special thanks to all of the families who hosted one or more of our German students, and for their help in organising some of the group activities.’

The MFL departments at King’s Ely are a hive of activity and we thrive on developing linguistic competence in all our pupils while offering a wide range of enrichment opportunities. Strong links with our partner schools, including in France and Spain, allows us to make learning a language a rich and real experience, through the use of the projects on which we base students’ learning. Working collaboratively with more than a dozen different schools across Europe also resulted in King’s Ely being officially recognised as an ‘eTwinning School’ earlier this year.
