The Wiltshire Schools' Athletics Association (WSAA) county championships took place in Swindon on Saturday 9 June 2018. Selection for this event is based on performance at the individual area sport events. In the Junior Girls (Years 8 & 9) 800m event, Imogen Tanner of Leehurst Swan was up against runners from schools all over Wiltshire.

In the race itself, Imogen started very strongly – a close second behind a South Wilts Grammar School girl. At 200m Imogen squeezed past her to take the lead, but this was short lived. At the 400m point the SWGS girl overtook Imogen to go back into the lead. Not to be outdone, Imogen stayed with the girl and at the 600m point went round the outside of her, took the lead and then led to the finish, achieving a new personal best of 2m and 27s, inside the county standard of 2m 29s.

Having achieved the county standard, the top 3 finishers will go onto the South West Schools Championships at Exeter on 16th June, from which are selected the athletes who, providing they have reached the entry standard for the finals, will represent their schools and their county at the English Schools final at Birmingham on the 13th and 14th July.

This was the 4th race that Imogen has won in a row and she has improved her 800m times by 11s so far this season and qualified for membership of the prestigious British Milers Club!
