Pocklington School won the Young Volunteer Award for its Community Action Programme, recognising Lower Sixth students’ weekly volunteering with local organisations and their commitment to empathy, service and community partnership.

Pocklington School has been recognised for its exceptional contribution to the local community, winning the ‘Young Volunteer’ Award at the Pocklington Community Volunteer Awards. The accolade celebrates the empathy, dedication and hard work of the School’s Lower Sixth students through its long-running Community Action Programme.

The award was presented to Miss Lucy Hornby, Co-Curricular Coordinator, along with pupils past and present who have taken part in the programme. Staff and students were invited to the ceremony by Louise Partridge from Pocklington Rugby in the Community, where the School’s ongoing commitment to volunteering and partnership work was praised.

Running every Thursday afternoon during term time, the Community Action Programme enables Sixth Form students to volunteer with local organisations including Dementia Forward, Wilberforce Care Home, Pocklington Rugby Club, I Love Zero and several local primary schools.

The partnership with Kings Mill School in Driffield has been especially meaningful, with Pocklington students leading sports sessions for disabled children and developing empathy and understanding in the process.

Reflecting on the award, Miss Hornby said:

“We are incredibly proud of our students for receiving the Young Volunteer Award. This recognition highlights the strong partnerships we have with local organisations and the power of a united community working together.”

Head of School Becky Lovelock added:

“We are delighted by this award, which reflects both the support our students give others and the personal growth they gain through the experience.”

The Pocklington School Swing Band, led by Director of Music Sam Austin, also performed at the awards ceremony, entertaining guests with a lively performance that captured the spirit of the evening.
