Topping the long list of this year’s scholarship winners from Packwood Haugh School in Ruyton XI Towns is 13 year-old Gorn Namchittai who has achieved the exceptional accolade of an academic scholarship (Election) to Winchester College.

Packwood Headmaster, Clive Smith-Langridge, said: “Gorn has applied himself to his studies with extraordinary dedication during his time at Packwood and he fully deserves this success. The smile on his face when he heard the news has been one of my highlights of the term.

“Gorn’s award is one of no fewer than 25 scholarships and exhibitions won this year by Packwood’s Year 8 pupils. The bumper crop of awards is the highest number in recent years and includes a top Butler Scholarship for Poppy Stephens among the nine scholarships to Shrewsbury School. Head Girl, Mary Brown and Head Boy, Angus Hill-Trevor also achieved academic scholarships to their chosen senior schools, Repton and Rugby respectively."

In all, the scholars are moving on to nine of the leading independent schools across the country, showing that Packwood is a prep school with a national reach. I offer my warmest congratulations to them all and I have no doubt they will continue to achieve at the very highest level at their different senior schools.”

Mr Smith-Langridge continued: “Founded in 1892, Packwood celebrates its 125th anniversary during the 2017-18 academic year. Over its long and illustrious history the school has earned a reputation for excellence in all areas – academic, sporting and in the arts – and our 125th anniversary is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate past successes but also to look forward to future developments.

“Packwood is thriving and continues to go from strength to strength. We are committed to providing the best possible education for our pupils in every way we can. The success we enjoy every year is testament to not only the dedication and professionalism of members of staff, but above all to the diligence and enthusiasm of the children. They flourish in the happy and positive environment at Packwood and invariably meet – and exceed – the high expectations we have of them.”

Packwood Haugh is a coeducational day and boarding school in Shropshire for pupils aged 4-13.
