The Forest at Merchiston announces new headteacher

The much-anticipated Forest at Merchiston has announced Davina Bowers, an accomplished Forest School leader with unrivalled experience, as its new head teacher.

Davina Bowers moves on from Edinburgh Academy to lead Merchiston’s The Forest Nursery and Forest Junior School. Previously Head of Nursery & Pre-Prep at Cargilfield School before moving to Edinburgh Academy in 2018, Davina brings 18 years of experience in early years education to her new position at Merchiston.

A qualified Forest School practitioner and Founder of Cando Beach School, she was also responsible for establishing the outdoor learning provision for Edinburgh Academy. It was this experience and expertise that won Bowers the position following a rigorous recruitment process.

Opening in September 2024, The Forest Nursery will be open to girls and boys from ages 3-5, while the Forest Junior School will accept years P1-P3.

Davina will be responsible for the running of both - delivering world-class educational experiences, supporting holistic development, and encouraging child-centred learning to nurture the very best out of pupils.

Davina Bowers stated: “I am honoured to have been appointed Head Teacher of The Forest at Merchiston and excited to pave the way for an unparalleled educational experience in the most beautiful natural setting in Edinburgh.

The fully co-educational Forest at Merchiston is due to open in September 2024. The Forest Nursery is open to ages 3 to 5. The Forest Junior School is open to P1-P3.Rolling admissions will then take place with the aim of the Junior school becoming fully co-ed by 2030.

Merchiston Castle Senior School will continue to be Scotland’s only all-boys independent boarding and day school for boys aged 12-18.
