Tonbridge School Chapel Choir had a joyous return to St Paul’s Cathedral at the beginning of the month, deputising for the Cathedral Choir on its Bank Holiday day off.

The choir sang Choral Evensong, part of the daily routine of worship offered at the cathedral, with a congregation of more than 500 present. This was the first Tonbridge performance at St Paul’s since 2016.

Choirmaster Julian Thomas said: “It was wonderful to be back singing at St Paul’s Cathedral and a unique experience for the boys to be making music in such a large space, with resonant acoustics.

“Singing familiar choral music in a totally different context offers an important opportunity for a choir’s development. I was particularly struck by how quickly the boys have reached this level once more, as Covid-19 restrictions were lifted for singers only last autumn.”

Music included Herbert Howells’ 'Collegium Regale - canticles' and John Ireland’s anthem 'Greater love hath no man'.
