Tonbridge’s winning team has right chemistry for competition

A Tonbridge School team has been awarded first place in the South East following a prestigious national science competition.

Lower Sixth boys Gabriel Day, Victor Wong and Bosco Lee took part in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Schools’ Analyst Competition, where they had to pit their skills and knowledge against those of teams from many other schools in the region.

The annual contest puts Year 12 students’ understanding of chemical analysis to the test via a series of hands-on experiments and problem-solving, theory-based questions, to be tackled by teams of three.

In total Tonbridge entered ten teams into this year’s contest, with Gabriel, Victor and Bosco winning in the South East section after papers were marked by the judging panel.

The boys will each receive a £50 gift voucher and the school will be receiving a £500 grant towards Analytical Chemistry. In total there were nine regional winning teams across the country.

The School’s David Dickinson, Chemistry Teacher, congratulated the boys on their excellent performance. “Many schools were competing in the South East and I’m extremely proud that a Tonbridge team came first,” he said. “Well done to all those who took part in this enjoyable and highly stimulating competition, and perhaps some will go on to choose analytical science as a future career.”
