There is no such thing as a typical CLS pupil. What characterises the education offered is a true preparation for life.

City of London School is a truly unique independent school, not least because of its unrivalled location on the banks of the Thames, between St. Paul's Cathedral and the Tate Modern. We are at the heart of the capital and our pupils benefit enormously from all that is on offer on our doorstep. Our location allows us to attract the very best outside speakers, offer top-class work shadowing placements and visit the many places of interest in this world-class city. We are a modern and forward-looking institution drawing on clever pupils from all social, economic and ethnic backgrounds and, in so doing, truly reflect the diversity of the capital in the 21st century. Pupils come from a huge number of both state primary and independent preparatory schools and, once here, receive an academic yet liberal education. Our central location allows pupils to travel to CLS from all over London, encouraging resourcefulness and self-reliance in their journey to school, and in their wider life.

Our examination results are excellent, but, more importantly, pupils leave us ready for life beyond school, with a sense of identity and an independence of thought and action which are rare among leavers from independent schools; it is significant that the vast majority of pupils go on to their first choice of university, with a large number attending Oxford and Cambridge universities, and various medical schools. Facilities are outstanding (the school moved downstream to its new buildings in 1986) and are continually updated. The state-of-the-art Winterflood Theatre and refurbished Science laboratories provide a first-rate environment in which our pupils learn and thrive. We are generously endowed with academic, music and sports scholarships and, in addition, the bursary campaign has raised significant funding for a number of full-fee places to be awarded each year to those who could not otherwise afford the fees. In this way, the school seeks to maintain the socio-economic mix which has always been its tradition and strength. Admission at 11+, 13+ and 16+ is by entrance examinations followed by interviews for those candidates who complete their examination papers to a satisfactory standard.
