The Preparatory School was opened in 1908 and is now the region's largest boarding and day preparatory school, catering for almost 500 pupils.
Clifton College Preparatory School is ranked as a top 100 independent preparatory school (Sunday Times 2016). We offer first class teaching and outstanding pastoral care for girls and boys aged 2 to 13. There is no 'one size fits all' approach, each child is treated as an individual and is encouraged to explore and develop their unique talents and skills. Our children are our best ambassadors. They are socially confident, intellectually agile, adventurous, well-mannered and decent young people.
We offer a tailored, all-round education with diverse and targeted co-curricular activities and excellent facilities.
Each year the Preparatory School sees more than 100 new pupils join from a wide range of schools nationwide and overseas. The main entry points are at Nursery, Year 3 and Year 7, though pupils are welcome to join into any of the year groups.
Exceptional pastoral care
From eight years old, pastoral care is House-based, with Housemasters and Housemistresses and their teams offering a 'home from home'. Our Pre-Prep pupils' pastoral care is provided by their dedicated classroom teachers; Year 3 pupils also have their own common room, which acts as an introduction to the House system. Each child has a tutor who meets with them weekly to discuss academic, co-curricular or any other matters.
We provide a rigorous and stimulating academic curriculum and we select teachers that lead in their field and share best practice. They encourage intellectual curiosity and independent learning, engendering academic self-belief and confidence in our pupils.
Diverse and targeted co-curricular activities
Our ethos encourages participation and all of our pupils engage with a diverse range of co-curricular activities and experiences. Through these activities we provide opportunities and challenges for pupils to find new strengths and talents and encourage collaboration.
Traditional values, modern facilities
The College successfully combines heritage with modernity, enjoying the best of both. Landscaped greenery surrounds our magnificent Grade II listed buildings which are on the outskirts of a vibrant international city. The Chapel is one of our most cherished buildings and The Redgrave is the third largest theatre in Bristol. Our superb sporting facilities include The Close and the 90-acre site known as 'Beggar's Bush' which is Bristol's biggest outdoor sports complex, providing all the latest sporting facilities.
All our pupils benefit from the Preparatory School being a boarding school, with early drop off and late pick up for our day pupils, enabling them to take part in a huge array of co-curricular activities. Our flexible and full boarding options mean that parents can choose the level of care that works best for their family, confident in the knowledge that their child will be happy, safe and secure.
Clifton College provides a supportive and welcoming atmosphere and allows pupils to benefit from the security and confidence that comes from belonging to the same school from the ages of 2 to 18. As pupils grow with the Preparatory School, their sense of independence and responsibility prepares them for their journey into the Upper School.
We aim to unlock your son or daughter's potential to enable them to become the best version of themselves they can be. Alongside high academic achievement, our pupils also excel in art, music, sport and drama. Recent Clifton College graduates have gone on to study music at the Royal Academy of Music, perform Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre, and win gold at the Olympics!
