Herne Hill School has much to offer - caring and enthusiastic staff, happy and confident children, and excellent results at 7+ years.

In the UK, it is the largest independent Pre-School and Pre-Prep focusing exclusively on 2 to 7 year olds. In South London, it is well known as an oasis of happy learning and as the largest feeder into the reputable Dulwich schools. Children join the Kindergarten in the autumn term of the year in which they become three years old, Pre-Reception in the autumn of the year they become four or then Reception. Chance vacancies are occasionally available in Years 1 and 2.

The school lies tucked away behind St Paul's Church on Herne Hill. Its grounds and facilities provide a 'homely', safe and nurturing feel while at the same time being open, green and deceptively large - the perfect environment for young children to blossom and enjoy discovering how to learn. Since January 2016, a new hall and Kindergarten has become fully operational and enabled a number of additional benefits:

  • the provision of healthy hot lunches freshly cooked on site daily;

  • a large, state-of-the-art Kindergarten with free-flow access to a covered outdoor play area;

  • a modern, multi-purpose hall for sports, drama, dance, assemblies, lunches, etc; and

  • upgraded playground facilities with a new, enlarged all-weather surface and a trim trail in the nature area.

By focusing on Early Years and Key Stage 1, Herne Hill School has developed a strong expertise in making the critical transition from 'nursery' to 'school' seamless. Children joining the Kindergarten and Pre-Reception can avoid the disruption of a 4+ change and have continuity for up to five years in what are arguably their most important formative years. Children joining in Reception also benefit from the smooth progression from a play-based learning approach to more structured lessons.

"Love | Care | Excellence" encapsulates the school philosophy that love, nurture and a caring environment foster the children's self-confidence, sense of achievement and happiness, thereby stimulating their curiosity and desire to learn. The school's atmosphere lives this philosophy. It is a caring, friendly and fun place, and at the same time there is an air of achievement, respect and discipline.

The proprietary curriculum is finely balanced to take account of each child's individual needs as well as the requirements of the 7+ entry tests - and to make learning fun! It is designed to develop the skills of independent learning and to sustain the children's innate joy of learning. Music, drama, gym, dancing and French are emphasised and taught by specialists. Wrap-around care is available from 8am to 6pm through a broad offering of attractive clubs aimed at satisfying the children's various interests and enabling earlier drop-off and later pick-up for parents.

The latest ISI inspection report delivered a strong endorsement of the school's ethos, staff, curriculum, modus operandi and infrastructure by giving the highest possible rating of 'excellent' or 'outstanding' to every aspect of the school. The inspectors deemed overall achievement to be excellent and that pupils are very well educated and achieve very high standards in both their learning and personal development. The full report can be found on www.isi.net.

The school holds two open mornings a year, typically in March and September. Prospective parents may also see the school 'in action' by joining one of the regular tours held during school hours. The school's website contains relevant information about life at the school, its curriculum and the destination of its leavers.
