Kilgraston Junior Years is the junior school for Kilgraston for girls aged 5 to 12. Kilgraston is a leading boarding and day school for girls in Scotland and the top performing independent school for Advanced Highers 2016 -bestschools. Located in its own building, the Junior Years is surrounded by 54 acres of stunning parkland in Bridge of Earn, three miles from the centre of Perth, 45 minutes from Edinburgh and an hour's drive from Glasgow.
Admission to Kilgraston Junior Years is by interview. Girls are able to progress into Kilgraston Senior School, or prepare for scholarship exams for Kilgraston and Common Entrance exams for other schools. The academic standard is high with all pupils completing the Junior Years and achieving a place in their senior school of choice.
Pupils are taught by class teachers until the age of 9, with specialist teachers for PE, French, music and drama. Form teachers hold pastoral responsibility for the pupils and classes are small with provision for additional support needs. From age 10, the curriculum becomes more specialized with increasing input from specialised subject staff and use of the facilities in the Senior School. Pastoral care is the responsibility of a tutor.
The core academic curriculum is enhanced by a wide range of co-curricular subjects. While academic excellence is a priority, art, drama and music flourish and are an important feature of life at Kilgraston. Classrooms are well equipped and modern IT facilities are spread throughout the school. Opportunities are provided throughout the year for pupils to perform in groups or as soloists and they compete successfully in local festivals and events. The girls have the opportunity to take LAMDA, Associated Board and Trinity examinations. There is an annual production involving all pupils.
Sports and recreation thrive within the superb Sports Hall, which includes a climbing wall and gym. Pupils benefit from a 25m indoor swimming pool, 9 floodlit all-weather courts, playing fields, astro-turf and athletics track. Kilgraston is the only school in Scotland with an equestrian facility on campus and also hosts the Scottish Schools Equestrian Championships. The school's main sports are: hockey, netball, tennis, rounders, swimming and athletics, and fixtures are regularly played against other preparatory schools. The school has an excellent skiing record.
Kilgraston Junior Years has a pastoral house system. Inter-House competitions and challenges in games, music and debating provide an opportunity for friendly competition and fun. The family atmosphere in the newly refurbished boarding area, Butterstone, is enhanced by the wide range of weekend activities that make use of the superb local facilities in and around Perthshire.
