Set in more than 100 acres of parkland overlooking the River Orwell in Suffolk, Orwell Park provides a broad and balanced education for boys and girls, boarders and day pupils, between the ages of 3 and 13. A modern, caring and flexible approach to boarding sets Orwell Park apart as a forward thinking school, which continues to instil traditional values such as commitment, compassion and courtesy in its pupils.
At Orwell Park, we have worked with all staff, all pupils and had discussions with and feedback from many parents in order to identify the values upon which we want to base our school. It is essential for everyone to 'buy in' to the ethos if they are to feel part of it. This is key because success depends on the values being modelled by adults (staff and parents), who should work together, so embedding the values as far as possible at home as well as at school. "Becoming the best that we can be" is in keeping with our focus on the principles of Growth Mindset. It is a phrase that we hope will remind us that we are on a journey to grow and develop in all areas of our lives, in the classroom, on the sports field and in our interactions with one another and the wider world. It also reminds us that this is a journey we are on together as a community. Our overarching value is 'Integrity', which we define as strength of character and strong moral principles, and we aspire for this to underpin everything that we do. We have five core values, each with supplementary values, which provide a common moral framework within which we aim to conduct ourselves: Kindness, Collaboration, Courage, Spirit and Respect.
As a school, we seek to explore these values, deepen our understanding, improving our application of them and to weave them through the fabric of the School. We aim to embed them in various ways including displays around the school, assemblies, through our rewards and sanctions and, perhaps most importantly of all, through staff and parents modelling our chosen values.
Academically, Orwell Park prides itself on successfully preparing children for entry to senior school at 13+, in 2017, 24 leavers won scholarships: for academic excellence or for music, art, sport, design and technology - all to a wide range of senior independent schools. Orwell Park offers academic challenge to all children and learning support to those who need it. In the classroom, a traditional curriculum (including classics) is taught, using the most modern methods.
Whilst we value greatly the past, we also embrace technology and, as such, every child in Years 3-8 has their own iPad in order to enhance learning in the classroom and beyond. The iPads allow pupils to learn in a way that they are used to, fostering collaboration between pupils, whilst providing portability.
In addition to the traditional curricular subjects, Orwell Park pupils are involved in a comprehensive activity programme, including: orchestra and various ensembles, chess, community service, skiing, equestrianism, climbing on the bouldering wall, OPS Challenge (a two-year mini DofE course), camping and campfire fun in the school's woodlands, Art and DT clubs, Brownies and Blueys (boys' club), as well as numerous large-scale theatrical productions.
Music plays a great part in the life of Orwell Park, with 80% of the children learning an instrument. The school boasts over 40 practice rooms, three concert grand pianos, and a modern, well equipped music technology suite. Art, design and technology are an important part of the curriculum and are a focus for creative talent.
The recently opened Pre-Prep has its own landscaped area and forms part of the 110 acre site, which includes the main Prep School.
