St John's College has achieved an enviable reputation both in Wales and amongst the top independent schools in England as a centre of academic excellence, achieving the best A Level record in Wales over 17 years. We are also delighted to have been listed as the top academic school in Wales in The Sunday Times 'Parent Power', based on combined GCSE and A Level performance. The College's most recent Estyn Inspection Report graded the school 'Excellent' in all areas, including the enviable and seldom awarded 'Excellent' grade for quality of teaching. The report stated that, "The quality of teaching is an exceptional feature of the school’s work." This year marks our 30th Anniversary and we remain committed to our aim of providing the best possible education for our girls and boys as they become young women and young men, embracing all that life has to offer with passion, commitment and integrity.

St John's has a distinguished record of success with University admissions. Specialist mentoring and one to one guidance are offered so that students are fully supported with their subject choices, UCAS personal statements, university choices and ultimately career paths. The school has an outstanding reputation for gaining places at first class universities. In 2017 the majority of our students, including a significant number with 4 A*/A grades, proceeded to Oxbridge and top Russell Group Universities.

Headmaster Mr Gareth Lloyd said: "This year nearly half the grades awarded were A* which is a truly outstanding achievement."

The school's strong, close-knit family community ensures that all pupils and students receive the care necessary to develop their full potential. Indeed, Estyn inspectors observed that "Throughout the school, there is a strong sense of collective purpose and a commitment to shared values and aims. The quality of teaching and learning has led to exceptional outcomes for pupils of all abilities" (Crown Copyright 2012).

Cathedral Choir & Music

The school is also proud of its outstanding musical reputation: a remarkable number of its most successful musicians are of diploma standard. The College's many instrumental ensembles include its award winning Concert Orchestra, which has been a finalist in the Welsh Proms Schools Competition and gives warmly received public concerts. As the Choir School to Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral, St John’s provides the boy and girl choristers for weekly services, two annual concerts at St David’s Hall, and concert tours across continental Europe. Our Cathedral Choir has appeared in the Hollywood film 'One Chance', and sings annual broadcasts on BBC Radio 4. Most recent concert tours include Paris, Bruges and Madrid, and the Choir has performed in St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and, most recently, with the choir of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge.

Co-curricular Provision

Beyond the classroom, pupils of all ages benefit from extensive co-curricular provision, including an extended sports programme as well as regular sports and ski tours. In the field of performing arts, in recent years pupils have performed critically-acclaimed productions of Twelfth Night, HMS Pinafore and The Sound of Music. The College is also proud of its national success in Chess, Public Speaking, Debating, Poetry, Mathematics, Science, Engineering and Young Enterprise competitions. Inspectors commented that 'The range of extra-curricular activities, particularly the outstanding musical, choral and cultural opportunities, contributes significantly to pupils academic development and wellbeing' (Estyn Inspection Crown Copyright, 2012).
