About Us

The Beacon is an Independent Prep School for boys aged 3 to 13 located within 18 acres of beautiful Chiltern countryside in Amersham. The school is renowned for academic excellence and a wide range of opportunities offered. Small class sizes and dedicated teachers ensure learning is personalised, with no boy being overlooked. The school fosters an inclusive, family atmosphere and strong community.

Set within its original 1933 site, The Beacon blends historic charm with modern amenities. Boys leave the school to attend some of the best senior schools in the country, fully prepared for the next step in their educational journey.

The Arts

An impressive array of opportunities enables boys to explore their creative talents. The Beacon boasts a 220-seated theatre plus a more intimate venue in the Old Barn. Drama thrives with three major productions annually, multiple concerts, workshops and a bi-annual performance at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. There is a well-rounded Music offering with a full orchestra, choirs, and instrumental ensembles.

An Art Studio is equipped with pottery, painting, and printing facilities. The Design & Technology workshop features top-of-the-range equipment, and the Cooking & Nutrition room is set to undergo an outstanding refurbishment in 2024. Boys from Year 4 onwards embrace a love for cooking, with weekly lessons and an annual MasterCook Competition adjudicated by award-winning local chefs.

Academic

Beacon boys thrive academically with learning tailored to individual needs. Many are offered scholarships at top Senior Schools.

A love of learning is ignited through exceptional specialised teaching expertise. The facilities constantly evolve with developments, such as a recently refurbished ICT room equipped with cutting-edge technology and an Interactive Augmented Reality Sandbox to enhance Geography.

As a founding school of the Pre-Senior Baccalaureate (PSB), The Beacon offers a cross-curricular approach combining academic learning with a tailored transformative experience developing core learning skills of Communication, Collaboration, Leadership, Reviewing and Improving, Independence, Thinking and Learning.

Specialist programmes are available for different Year Groups, including the Future Sparks for Middle School and the Upper School Shining Future programme, both of which focus on enriching pupils' lives with lifelong skills.

Most recently, Beacon boys took part in a cricket tour to South Africa and a team of ski-enthusiasts competed in the IAPS Ski Championship in Italy.

All boys enjoy Outdoor Learning in the surrounding woodlands, developing valuable skills such as survival techniques.
