Introduction
Clifton High School is a thriving, co-educational independent day school for 795 pupils ranging in age from 3-to-18 years old. Located in Clifton Village, a picturesque area set in the heart of Bristol, it is a School that immerses itself in the local community and whilst it embraces tradition, it is unafraid of change.
Founded from the simple will of a few pioneering educators in 1877, Clifton High School has evolved from an all-girls' School to what it stands for today; providing a solid, mixed gender and inclusive education focused on holistic values with an emphasis on an exceptionally nurturing approach to learning.
Ethos
As an all-through School, Clifton High School is driven by the core values of Curiosity, Empathy, Love and Direction. All children, at every stage of their educational journey, learn within small class sizes and are nurtured by a well-administered community safety net that sits alongside the triangular collaborative investment and communication links between teachers, parents and pupils. Whilst the academic results speak for themselves, the supremacy of wellbeing is the School's overriding achievement.
Realising the individual brilliance of each pupil is managed by teachers who grow to recognise their gifts so to motivate them to become passionate in their interests, offering them unique opportunities to shine. All pupils are encouraged to reach personal milestones as well as set standards with confidence, as they work individually and collaboratively towards embarking upon successful and self-fulfilled futures.
Academic Success
Clifton High School consistently meets and exceeds baseline grade predictions in every subject with academic results consistently outstanding, revealing clear evidence of the achievements of our GCSE and A level pupils. In 2025, over 77% of all grades awarded at GCSE were at level 9 to 6. Furthermore, 96% of all grades were level 9 to 4 and at A level, 63% of grades were A*–B and over 33.3% A*–A.
As an academically selective School, Senior pupils are recommended to choose nine GCSE subjects and Sixth Form students expected to select three A levels and up to two additional ancillaries from an offering of twenty-seven subjects. The excellent academic results and the value Clifton High School adds to the pupil's outcomes consistently set us above other parallel schools.
Curriculum
Clifton High School's Pre-School and Infant School follow the latest Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which encourages a responsive and explorative approach to learning. The introduction of a range of subjects and opportunities at this early stage is designed with individualism in mind.
The Junior School merges excellent pastoral care with a focus on academic teaching to encapsulate development on all levels. A broad, pupil-centric, bespoke curriculum benefits from specialist subject teachers, allowing an optimal learning experience whilst catering to each child's evolving needs.
The Senior School incorporates the successful Diamond Edge Model into teaching methods, allowing pupils to be supported in their individual dynamic needs, teaching boys and girls separately in the core subjects of Mathematics, English and the Sciences during Years 7, 8 and 9.
The Sixth Form is distinctive in its approach to a selective, co-education for students in purpose-built facilities that support outstanding teaching that ensures academic experience is tailored to future pathways. The A level and ancillary courses offered are supported by a bespoke 'Above and Beyond' Programme as well as Careers Guidance and Co-Curricular Programmes.
Facilities
Clifton High School pupils benefit from access to a wealth of on-site and external facilities and resources that contribute to their education. These include a newly designed Sixth Form Centre, built to meet the evolving needs of young people, a Science Department hosting seven laboratories, a STEM Room and Design Workshop, Food and Nutrition room, heated 25-metre indoor swimming pool with spectator's gallery, on-site tennis courts with coaching from a dedicated professional tennis coach, a gymnasium featuring a climbing wall, cardio, strength and conditioning suites and floodlit multi-games courts. Our valued and esteemed sporting partnerships with the University of Bristol, Henleaze Performance Swimming Club and Bristol Sport afford our pupils access to world-class, off-site professional coaching and state-of-the-art facilities.
Co-Curricular Programme
Clifton High School prides itself on the enviable breadth of enrichment learning that is offered through an extensive array of co-curricular clubs that equip pupils with the tools to embrace new challenges and navigate relationships. All co-curricular clubs, the Adventure Programme and external national and international educational trips are thoughtfully curated to sit within one of the three spheres of Skills Development, Academic Progress and Individual Brilliance. The overall aim is for the School to provide, and the pupils to embrace, a holistic approach to individual growth and personal development.
Pastoral Support
The outstanding pastoral care for which Clifton High School is renowned, is one that underpins the education children receive and provides all pupils with the privilege of personal success. The importance of our commitment, as educators, to our pupils' wellbeing and growth of confidence establishes a pupil-centric approach of guidance. The overarching goal is to create a culture strengthened by a united community that openly recognises and applauds our differences whether it be in gender, race, colour, nationality, disability, religion or culture.
Pupil Outcomes
Children depart Clifton High School to attend a variety of universities and study a wide range of both academic and creative subjects. Leavers automatically become enrolled as Clifton Rosarians (Alumni) and are considered to be a long line of individuals who have achieved significant success beyond the education gained at Clifton High School. We are proud of all pupils as they continue to discover their individual brilliance, retaining Clifton High School's values of Curiosity, Love, Empathy and Direction to make a positive contribution to society.
