We pride ourselves on opening young minds to learning at Downsend. It is here, across our three Pre-Preps in Leatherhead, Ashtead and Epsom and our Prep School in Leatherhead that our dynamic and creative curriculum challenges our children.

Downsend is an established, academic preparatory school which is dynamic and contemporary. We provide each child with a broad education, through experiencing a vibrant school life that extends beyond the classroom, and provides outstanding academic development. We encourage our pupils to become well-rounded individuals in a modern society.

Children enjoy interactive lessons and are introduced to a varied and specialised curriculum from Year 2 and experience working with specialist teachers in Games, Music, Food Technology and Textiles. From Year 6 children are taught by subject specialists, who maximise each child’s potential and ensure continuity and progress. Academic focus is geared towards preparation for Common Entrance or Scholarship examinations.

For those who enjoy sport and creative arts we have excellent facilities including cricket, football and rugby pitches, tennis and netball courts, Astroturf pitch for hockey, indoor swimming pool and a sports hall and pavilion. We have a Music Suite for orchestras, choirs, jazz & rock bands and a Drama room with termly productions.

Our pastoral care is second to none. Each child in Years 2 & 3 has a Form Teacher who takes them for the majority of their timetabled day, supported by a Teaching Assistant. From Year 4, the children are set for the core academic lessons and begin to experience an increasing number of subject specialist teachers. From Year 6 each pupil has a tutor and their relationship is pivotal to a child’s success. Tutors set clear guidelines, but the approach is friendly and informal and we pride ourselves on the relationships between the staff and children.

By the time they leave us, a Downsend pupil will have had the chance to learn to play a musical instrument, speak and write three languages, play up to 20 different sports and represent the school at 3 sports, conduct their own experiments in one of three Science Labs, been involved in a school production and so much more.

However your child is keen to develop their skills, our school buzzes with opportunity and a sense of achievement and supports the children in their chosen
