Established in 1874, Manchester High School for Girls (MHSG) has a long and proud history of educating women who have gone on to change the world.

Its alumnae include the famous suffragette sisters, Sylvia, Christabel and Adele Pankhurst, through to present-day business leaders such as Nicola Mendelsohn, Vice President of Facebook EMEA and Anushka Asthana, Editor-at-Large at The Guardian.

As a ‘through’ school, for girls aged 4–18, Manchester High enables pupils to enjoy a seamless and settled education from their infant years through to the early days of adulthood. Whatever stage of school life they are at, students find Manchester High a vibrant and stimulating environment, where their classmates, not just the teachers, support and encourage them.

The School is committed to developing fulfilled and balanced individuals through diverse extra-curricular activities, and exceptional Well Being and Futures programmes.

Girls benefit from a wide and varied learning experience that is full of opportunity, and they are challenged and supported to achieve their personal best. This is a testament to the school’s public examination results which are, year on year, some of the best in the country.

At MHSG, artistic and sporting talents are nurtured and students enjoy a diverse range of extracurricular activities. These are complemented by superb modern facilities which include a sports complex, a fitness suite, a dance studio, all-weather sports pitches, a multi-purpose auditorium, a drama studio, a purpose-built Music House a state-of-the-art Sixth Form Centre with lecture theatre, common room and study area. Instrumental and Speech & Drama lessons are optional extras.

Highly skilled and committed staff strive to ensure that every MHSG student leaves the School a well-educated young woman, with highly-developed interpersonal skills and a broad range of interests. The School encourages girls to respect themselves and others; developing responsible global citizens who have a positive impact on the world.

Students at Manchester High come from a wide range of backgrounds and this rich social and cultural mix gives the School a warm and friendly feel. The girls learn about the importance of social responsibility with charity, voluntary and community work strongly encouraged.

Entry to the Reception class is by assessment while an entrance examination is set for the Juniors and Year 7. From time to time vacancies in other year groups can become available, but the main entry points are at ages 4, 11 and 16. Sixth Form assessment is by interview and GCSE qualifications.

MHSG is committed to providing education to academically gifted girls regardless of circumstance. In the Senior School financial assistance is offered through a limited number of part or full means-tested bursaries. One or more scholarships may be awarded for excellence in performance in the entrance tests taken at the age of 10 or 11 for admission to the Senior School in September. Music, Sports and Dance scholarships are available. Such scholarships will be awarded on merit only, not on the basis of parental income, and will provide part remission of fees.

Further details and a prospectus are available from the Registrar.

The Reports of the ISI Inspections from 2016 and 2019 can be viewed on the School’s website.
