"A balanced curriculum, excellent pastoral care and a high A Level pass rate make Merchiston one of the UK's leading independent schools." - www.ukboardingschools.com

Merchiston is the only boys' independent boarding and day school in Scotland, and offers GCSE, Scottish Highers and A levels. We take pride in specializing in the education of boys, from age 7, and preparing them for the world, developing aspirational, and sensitive, yet gentle-men! Think about a wonderfully caring and nurturing family environment, where they will learn to like learning more.

With an ethos based on traditional values, Merchiston encourages self-reliance and independence, as well as respect for and tolerance of others. The school's main objective is to motivate pupils to try their hardest and to strive to achieve the highest levels possible in all areas - firstly academic, then cultural, sporting, leadership, and simply living together as part of a community.

The curriculum at Merchiston Juniors is designed with the following principles in mind: challenge and enjoyment, breadth, progression, depth, personalisation and choice, coherence and relevance.

The variety of types of activity within the classroom provides opportunity for individual study, creativity, leadership, co-operative learning, self- and peer assessment and target setting. Co-curricular activities in the arts and sport provide numerous additional opportunities to be challenged, to flourish and to succeed. Merchiston is looking to develop successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. The school believes that the wide range of opportunities on offer allows each learner to thrive and develop in a rounded manner.

The school provides a stimulating, challenging, yet supportive and encouraging environment where your son can grow up surrounded by his friends within the unique house structure. A Housemother ensures the smooth-running of the domestic side of the House and provides valuable pastoral back-up. An enthusiastic and committed team of tutors and prefects allows the school to provide exciting recreational and social activities, designed to meet the needs of every boy. Boys leave Merchiston Juniors eager and ready to make the most of the opportunities available to them in the Senior School, and detailed discussions take place to ensure their smooth transition to life in the Senior School.

Links with Girls' Schools

Merchiston also benefits from its strong links with girls' schools for drama performances, cultural events and social gatherings.

Scholarships and Financial Assistance

A range of scholarships are available at ages 10+. A financial concession is not automatically applied to a Scholarship but, where parents wish, they may apply for means-tested financial assistance.
