St Columba's College and Preparatory School is an independent Catholic day school for pupils aged 4-18 in the heart of St Albans, Hertfordshire. We provide a high-quality education to young people of all faiths and none.

Our Columban ethos and values guide all that we do, allowing us to provide an education of the head and heart that places happiness and confidence at the centre of our mission. We have created a nurturing environment where each student is challenged to achieve their own best academic standard, while becoming confident, resilient and compassionate individuals.

Teaching the Columban values of courage, courtesy and compassion enables our students to become confident and well-rounded individuals, with the skills to enter an ever-changing and complex world.

Our moral education is based on the educational tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. We support each student's development in a community where they are known, valued and treasured, through a well-structured pastoral system.

We strive for academic excellence whilst realising that it is a well-rounded education that best prepares our young people for the world and workplace of tomorrow. As a result, our young people are academically successful, intellectually curious, happy and empathetic. The world needs leaders with these qualities, who can connect with people and respond wisely to the many complex challenges we face in an ever-changing society.

St Columba's College has moved to co-education! In January 2021, we welcomed girls into Reception. From September 2021, girls will join each year group in Lower Prep (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) and the Lower Sixth Form (Year 12).

From September 2022, girls will be welcomed into Form 1/Year 7. This will be followed by a phased transition, which will eventually see St Columba's offering its unique, high-quality Catholic educations to both boys and girls from ages 4-18.

In recent years we have invested millions of pounds in new facilities including a fitness suite, science and D&T labs and a modern IT suite in the Prep School. In 2021 we will be refurbishing our Sixth Form Centre, and Senior School Music Department and there are plans to upgrade our sports pitches, for use by the whole school.

Our remote learning programme in 2020 and 2021 was a great success with parents and pupils. Our dedicated staff utilised a range of resources, including Microsoft Teams, to deliver interactive and engaging lessons, following the normal timetables. We continued our provision of strong pastoral support through regular communication with parents and students. The Heads of House and Tutors maintained ongoing contact with the students and their families as they adapted to remote learning.

Here are some snippets of what some of our parents said about our remote programme: 'A big thank you for the excellent pastoral care for both boys. We are really fortunate that the school generally takes such an interest in their wellbeing. The teaching is excellent.'

'Thank you for the brilliant job you are doing. It must be extremely difficult. Our son is very happy and therefore so are we.'

St Columba's pupils continue to be recognised nationally for their academic and extra-curricular achievements, including the Big Bang (STEM) Competition Finals, Biology and Physics Olympiads, and the British Education Awards. They continue to be accepted onto prestigious programmes such as the Royal College of Music Junior Department.
