St. Margaret's Prep School is a happy, co-ed, independent school for children aged 2–1. Rated 'excellent' in all areas by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

We know choosing a school for your child can be daunting. That's why we're here to hold their hand - and yours!

Our lovely school, formerly the Coach House and Stable block for Gosfield Hall before becoming a school in 1946, is situated in the heart of rural North Essex, within easy reach of Halstead, Braintree, Sudbury, Colchester, Chelmsford, Felsted and Gt. Dunmow.

Our classrooms are beautiful, bright and spacious, and seven acres of peaceful listed parkland allows room for exploring and building new friendships. A wide range of extracurricular activities, within the school day, and during before and after school clubs, builds confidence and instils a lifelong love of learning.

Classes are small, with dedicated, enthusiastic, well qualified class teachers and specialist staff, right from the nursery, for Languages, Music, Drama, Art, Computer Science, PE and Forest School.

We strive to make every child a confident, enthusiastic reader using the 'Jolly Phonics' and 'Letters & Sounds' programmes in Reception and building on that as they grow. Maths is taught daily to build solid foundations and Science, topic work, computer science, creative play and art add extra fizz to the week.

Parents who send their children to St Margaret's know our reputation for developing exceptionally well-rounded pupils with a love of learning. Our aim is to ensure that every child is engaged in their learning and given as many opportunities as possible for intellectual, physical and social growth. We do this within a structured, yet happy and enjoyable environment, where each child is helped to fulfil their potential, in class, in the arts, in music and on the sports field.

We believe in celebrating the achievements of every child, encouraging them to learn, recognising their strengths and supporting them as they try new things.

Music is a particular speciality of the school; with thirteen visiting peripatetic teachers supporting our own music teachers we offer lessons in a range of instruments from cello to harp, trumpet to drums and everything in between. With a vast array of ensembles and choirs every child is encouraged to join in. Over 90% of our Prep children have an individual lesson in at least one instrument.

At St. Margaret's, each individual has the opportunity to develop their strengths and to discover new talents and interests. From the very youngest child, our pupils are polite and kind, and grow to develop into mature and independent individuals. We are extremely proud of our ability to help pupils move to their chosen secondary schools, and we have an enviable track record of academic, sport, music, drama and art scholarships.

Our children are our greatest achievement, and we are very proud to be a part of their lives. We know St. Margaret's can provide your child with the best possible start to their educational journey.

Every day's an Open Day - come and see for yourself why we’re so proud of our School.
