Choosing a school for your child at 4 years old is an important decision and a significant first opportunity to inspire a little learner and prepare them for the next stage. At Merlin School we specialise in these precious early years. The Merlin School, established in 1986, is a creative and nurturing co-educational pre-prep school, which does not assess on entry. You’ll find us in the heart of Putney, in a beautiful Victorian house. We offer a warm and homely atmosphere where all staff take time to engage with our children, supporting the development of their independence and confidence. Creative and practical activities enhance learning and stimulate their imagination.
Our school motto is ‘have a go’ and our main area of focus is to evoke a thirst for learning, encouraging curiosity in the world around us. Whilst Maths and English underpin our syllabus, we very much delight in the breadth and depth of subjects taught here. Pupils relish the challenge of their first formal sports lessons, learning about team work and sportsmanship, alongside their specific sports skills, gearing them up to find their own sporting pathway. Our children bounce in to Science lessons wondering what practical activity awaits, they master thinking in their computing lessons and build confidence with presentations, assemblies and innovative drama productions which are written specifically for them.
We believe that losing sight of the importance of the broad spectrum of subjects and cramming children in one or two areas only, can result in denying pupils crucial and exciting opportunities. It is about the child enjoying their childhood and ‘doing!’.
Over half of our timetable is taught by specialist teachers including Science, Drama, Music, Art/DT, Computing, French and PE/Games with both our Deputy and Head being actively involved in the teaching of all year groups. Our Topic work is both vibrant and stimulating; a wander around our classrooms will take you on a journey through various topics from Gods and Monsters to The Seven Wonders of The World.
At the end of their educational journey with us we send our pupils off to their next schools with the confidence to build new relationships, the enthusiasm to learn and a positive attitude to new challenges. Despite being a non-selective school, Merlin children make excellent progress from their individual starting points, and go on to a range of prestigious Prep Schools.
At Merlin School we are immensely proud of our Ofsted inspection (November 2017), where we were graded ‘Outstanding’ in all five areas. Ofsted described our curriculum as being ‘planned carefully to captivate pupils’ interests’. Merlin children were described as ‘resilient and independent learners who set about every activity with enthusiasm... they display excellent communication skills and are confident learners’. Our EYFS provision was reported as Outstanding, highlighting the strong and sustained progress the children make in all areas of learning.
