The Village Prep School in Belsize Park, wholeheartedly believes that every child should achieve their full potential through exceptional teaching tailored to individual needs. The school offers their 2.5 - 11 year old girls, meaningful and exciting learning experiences that go well beyond the curriculum and take advantage of the school's huge outdoor space right in the heart of Belsize Park. Village Prep girls achieve fantastic results and 2021 saw the school’s best ever Year 6 results with 16 scholarships to an impressive range of leading London Day Schools including City of London School for Girls, South Hampstead and St Paul's.
The school's commitment to nurturing a love of learning is evident in the breadth of opportunities afforded to the girls. The new Head Morven MacDonald, who joined the school in September 2021 after 7 years at Garden House in Chelsea has a passion for nurturing a love a learning and this is evident in every area of school life. Teachers are courageous and exciting in their approach to teaching and the facilities at the Village, including half an acre of outdoor space, permit these opportunities to happen with ease. The school's outdoor space includes a full-sized floodlit netball court, a large grassed area, an adventure playground, an outdoor classroom and fruit trees and herb gardens. Beyond this space there is a well-equipped theatre which is used for gymnastics, dance, ballet, yoga, indoor games and fencing as well as the girls wonderful theatrical productions.
Sport is an important part of life at The Village Prep, and as a partner school of Saracens Rugby Club and associate school of Saracens Mavericks Netball Club, the girls have the opportunity to see top class sport and to gain coaching tips from experienced professionals. As part of Chatsworth Schools, the school also benefits from invaluable expertise by being part of a family of schools.
The Village Prep is not afraid to do things differently and as a result, girls are both nurtured and thriving academically. At the heart of the school's approach is their 'no homework' policy, which means from aged 7, girls are given homework slots during the school day. The Village believe this helps girls develop excellent independent study skills as well as providing immediate feedback for teachers. Moreover, girls leave school at 4.30pm having completed their homework, attended an extra-curricular club and therefore, home time is for family discussions, reading and play! This approach promotes a love of learning and ensures girls are refreshed and focused for the next day.
Throughout the school, teachers nurture a commitment to protect the planet. This is reflected across the school from the hessian backing on display boards, to the school's work with a local social enterprise group and the way in which the girls are given awareness of the impact of their food choices by highlighting the carbon footprint of the different food options served at lunchtime. The Village Prep's eco approach is an important part of their school ethos.
The school aims to equip the girls with the right skills to be the best they can be in the world. This includes an education that goes beyond the normal curriculum, such as the Village Business Award which provides girls with an initial investment which they can use to create and subsequently sell their own products to raise money for local charities.
As the girls reach their last year at The Village Prep the school seeks to make every moment count through enrichment and responsibility as well as exam preparation. There is a bespoke approach to the 11+ and in their final year, girls complete weekly practise examinations tailored to their individual needs and also enjoy art appreciation lessons which teach them how to form ideas and learn how to share them. Every Village Prep girl receives the support and input they need to demonstrate their full potential.
