Brentwood School Golf Captain, Max Porteous, is a fairway closer to realising his dreams after winning both the U16 and U18 Essex Boys' Championships - making school history in the process.

Fourteen-year-old Max, who first picked up a golf club 10 years ago, was in sizzling form taking both competitions, held at Burnham-on-Crouch Golf Club, by storm. He was the only competitor to shoot under par over the 36 holes, taking the titles by 4 shots.

Brentwood School Head of Golf, Mr Chris Long, congratulated Max on his record breaking victory: “This is a remarkable achievement by somebody so young, and is the first time the competition has been won by a pupil from Brentwood.”

Max is a member at Thorndon Park Golf Course (where his handicap of 3.5 is held) and also Warley Park Golf Course where he started playing competitively some five years ago.

Proud mum, Mrs Liz Porteous, explained: “Max started playing golf at the age of four while we were on a family holiday at a golf resort in Portugal. He just picked up a club and discovered he had a natural swing.

“He was also encouraged by watching his dad, John, play golf… although not to the same standard!”

Max’s goal is to attend a USA college with an eminent golf team and he is a fairway towards that dream. During the school holidays he plays / practises at least six times a week and during term time he can be found on the green around school commitments.

The Brentwood School golf team is going from strength to strength having reached the Independent Schools Golf Association (ISGA) final two years in a row - no mean feat as the team has one of the lowest average ages of all the teams taking part.
