Felsted Scores High in National Maths Challenge

Four Felsted School Sixth Formers took on 17 other schools, including a number of local grammar schools at the regional heat of the Senior Maths Team Challenge, securing a bronze place finish.

Team member Emma Jones, aged 17 from Hertfordshire was announced as the top student in the UK Maths Challenge Solo competition the week before. She was then joined for the Team Challenge by Irvette Xu and Elizabath Luo, both full boarders from China, and Elliott Smith, a weekly boarder from Great Dunmow. The team took on three challenging rounds of problem solving, logical thinking and higher level maths. They now await to find out if their score has qualified them for a place in the National Finals 2020.

Mathematics is offered at Felsted for both A Level and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. In the Solo Maths Challenge, Rory Aitken from Great Leighs and Michelle Guo from China were the highest placed Upper and Lower Sixth A Level Maths students respectively and Andrea Wagner, an Italian full boarder from Dubai and Milly Adshead-Grant from Cressing were the highest placed Upper and Lower Sixth IB students.

Felsted Maths Teacher Mr John Jevons comments; “All the students represented the school fantastically; they were fully committed to preparing for the competition and worked superbly as a team.”

Mathematics at Felsted is a strong discipline at all levels, with impressive results at GCSE, A Level and IB and a number of top achievers going on to study Maths at a higher level. In 2019, Felsted’s top A Level achiever was Jack Huang who achieved an A* in Maths and Further Maths securing him a place at Cambridge University to continue his studies.
