Holme Grange speaker programme off to a flying start

As part of Holme Grange Speaker Programme, the school welcomed Army Sergeant Major Glenn Haughton to speak to them about Values and Standards.

As part of Holme Grange Speaker Programme, the school welcomed Army Sergeant Major Glenn Haughton to speak to them about Values and Standards. In 2015 Glenn Haughton was appointed Army Sergeant Major, the most senior warrant officer in the British Army. He was previously Regimental Sergeant Major of the 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards and Academy Sergeant Major at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

The students were reminded of the importance of values in their lives and how ‘living’ ones values is the most important thing. He made links with those of the British Army and Holme Grange School and provided staff, parents and pupils with some very thought-provoking moments in his talk.

Sergeant Major Haughton was asked by one student which value he believed to be the most important one. ‘Courage’ was his response, he explained: “Physical courage to undertake tasks which present us with fear or worry but more importantly moral courage to act and not ‘walk on by’, to take action when you know you should despite the personal discomfort and consequences this may bring, because it is the right thing to do.” He reminded them that everyone can act to change the world and make it a better place.

Headteacher Claire Robinson commented: “It was lovely to welcome Sergeant Major Haughton to the school for the first time. It is vitally important to provide our pupils with real life examples of things we practise here at school every day. I am passionate about our Speaker Programme as we welcome a variety of visiting speakers, some experts in their field or simply motivational with experiences to share.”
