Two King’s Ely Sixth Form students have been awarded places at prestigious junior music conservatoires.

Ally Bowerman and Mimi Hughes, who are both in Year 12 and are Sixth Form Ely Cathedral Choral Scholars, are visiting the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Junior Royal Academy of Music, respectively, every Saturday to study Voice.

The talented pair join Year 10 student, Polly Casey, who has been studying both the Recorder and French Horn at the Junior Royal College of Music since the spring.

Neil Porter-Thaw, Director of Music at King’s Ely, said: “The audition processes for these junior conservatoires are fiercely competitive and rigorous, so to have three King’s Ely students at three different establishments is a fantastic achievement. No doubt our younger students will benefit from Mimi, Ally and Polly’s stories as many more King’s musicians are looking to follow suit.”

Music is the beating heart of King’s Ely and is one of the reasons why the school came into existence in the first place. Over a third of students learn a musical instrument or receive vocal tuition and the quality, range and variety of ensembles all attest to the school’s musical pedigree. The school calendar is jam-packed with student-led and professional concerts, workshops and masterclasses, all of which, together with the excellence of the school’s Cathedral Choirs, highlight how music is the soul of the King’s Ely community and testify to its inclusivity.
