Felsted School student Maddy Stapleton, age 16, has been selected for the National Youth Theatre (NYT), out of 1000s of young people who auditioned throughout the UK.

The NYT is a world leading arts organisation; established in 1956 it commissions new writing and reinterpretation of classics for young people in the company to work on and perform in iconic venues at home and abroad.

Once Maddy has completed her induction, she will join the company and audition further for one off unique theatre, film and television projects that happen around the country in the school holidays. Maddy hopes to have her induction this summer if COVID-19 restrictions allow.

The NYT has launched the careers of many aspiring actors and designers, with alumni including Helen Mirren, Daniel Craig, Daniel Day-Lewis, Orlando Bloom, Catherine Tate, Matt Lucas, Hugh Bonneville, Matt Smith and many more.

With aspirations to work in either theatre or film, Maddy has starred in a number of productions at Felsted, including taking on the role of Lefou in last year’s production of Beauty and the Beast.

Maddy comments; “It feels really amazing and unreal to have been selected for the National Youth Theatre and I am very excited to get involved with everything that they have to offer! In the future I would like to have a career in theatre and film, and so the NYT will give me a great start into the industry.”

Drama is a strong discipline at Felsted, with annual productions at every age group and an encouragement to take part in all aspects of theatre, from set design to music and lighting. Drama and LAMDA lessons have continued virtually throughout lockdown as part of the Felsted’s extensive ‘Felsted at Home’ learning programme. Students are looking forward to returning to the Felsted stage as soon as it is safe to do so. Drama scholarships are available from the age of 11; please get in touch with their Admissions Team for further information www.felsted.org.
