Students and staff from St Columba's College in St Albans have been volunteering their time and services during lockdown to help those in need, including for the NHS Community Responders scheme.

Ben in the Lower Sixth volunteers at Watford General Hospital tidying the site, picking up litter and ensuring the cleanliness and safety of the grounds. Ben has been thanked personally by the hospital CEO and numerous consultants have had conversations about how he is making a huge difference to their working environment. Cormac, also a Sixth Form student, volunteers as an NHS community responder, and has been busy collecting shopping for people in his local community.

Mr Livesey, Head of McClancy House, has volunteered over 1,500 hours for the NHS, and is also a mental health mentor for MIND in Mid Herts.

Form 3 student Pedro has been shopping every week since the start of lockdown for his elderly neighbours, and dropping it at their door. He has also cooked meals for his neighbours, including the award-winning cake he made for the SCC Inter-House Bake Off.

Meanwhile, Form 5 student Guy has been helping his elderly neighbours who are self-isolating by posting a note offering to clean their windows for free to ‘Let the Sunshine In’. He showed great initiative and willingness to help others, making sure vulnerable community members are not isolated.

Thank you to all the staff and students who have been helping the community during this time on top of schoolwork, it typifies the Columban values of courage, courtesy and compassion.
