Churcher’s College raises over £10k for United World Schools charity

Churcher’s College has been supporting United World Schools's Mude school in Nepal through various fundraising activities and now we are thrilled to report that in December 2018 Churcher's College made a donation which meant that we have now raised an amazing £10,403 for the charity!

UWS has, in the last few years, built one of two schools in Nepal which Churcher's College has been directly supporting. Students are given their own UWS schoolbags filled with stationery and resources. These are a great way to make children identify with the school, and they have seen an increase in attendance since handing these out.

They also hold teacher training – the focus being on more interactive and child-centred lesson plans, including art, storytelling and group numeracy games.

You can read an article from TES Magazine covering a day-in-the-life account of a teacher at Mude School who appreciates more than most the value education has for rural villages.

Surya, UWS Nepal Country Director (who has previously spoken at a Churcher's College assembly), asked us to share this extract from a recent speech:

‘Back in 2015 standing at the edge of a hill 2000m above sea level in Mude, a remote village in the foothills of the Himalayas, I couldn't have dreamed of getting to where we are today, with 25 UWS schools and more than 2700 children learning to read, write and count.

‘That hill that I was standing on is today home to our first UWS Nepal school. UWS Mude School took us one year to get built and running. During that year, we overcame the tragedies of the earthquake of 2015, the trade blockade, the destructive monsoon floods and intermittent supply of construction materials. But thanks to the people of Mude and the hard work of the UWS Nepal team, today we have a wonderful school that makes education a reality for over 160 children.

‘With your support, we are confident in delivering on our promise to create life opportunities through education. Thank you for being a part of this journey.’

About the project:

In most of the remote villages of Nepal, many children have not been able to attend schools and have been barred from quality education. UWS-Nepal aims to collaborate with the state and help millions of lives in achieving quality education regardless of their gender, ethnicity or race. Within a short span, after its registration, UWS-Nepal in assistance with Diyalo Foundation began work to ensure quality education in this remote district and build schools and support communities by providing a free basic education.
