Heath Mount prep school in Hertfordshire is celebrating the success of some of its young artists after they were selected to be part of The Royal Academy’s first ever Young Artists Show to recognise the talent of primary and secondary school age children.

Only 139 artworks were chosen to be exhibited on site at the Royal Academy from over 6,200 entries and of these Heath Mount had 4 artworks selected. Year 8 pupil Olivia Freeman is one of only 2 children to have had more than one artwork chosen. Her acrylic painting Panoramic Place was also chosen by RA President Christopher le Brun as prize winner in the ‘most inspiring artwork category’. Her other painting, Sweet Sixteen, was also picked to be exhibited.

Year 4 pupil Isobel Pickering will also have her pastel dog portrait displayed as will the whole of Year 4 whose collective pottery piece ‘Dog Show’ attracted the judges’ attention.

Panoramic Place, Acrylic on Board President’s Prize Winner For Most Inspiring Artwork

Olivia Freeman, Year 8, said: “This is a painting of a familiar place where I have spent many hours. I love this spot and felt very challenged by green when painting this work. Along the way I took on board some of the greatest artists from Constable to Henri Rousseau.”

Sweet Sixteen, Acrylic Paint on Board

Olivia Freeman, Year 8, said: “Partly inspired by the art of Wayne Thiebaud, I painted these donuts to make them look tempting.”

Dog Show, Glazed Clay

This is a collective piece done by Year 4 and inspired by Crufts and the Terracotta Army. Each child modelled a dog, some inspired by pedigree breeds and others, unknown varieties.

Dog 11, Chalk Pastel

Isobel Pickering, Year 4

This is a chalk pastel drawing made as part of a Year 4 group work: 'Doggie Dozen' - twelve dog portraits inspired by looking at lots of different artists who have drawn, painted and created dogs from Gainsborough to Hockney.
