Millfield Sixth Form student Yuhka Machino has been selected for one of only six places in the UK team for the 2020 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The prestigious competition, which sees children from over 100 countries compete to solve complex mathematical problems, will be hosted by Russia (but held online due to current travel restrictions) in September 2020.

Yuhka recently won a bronze medal at the 2020 Romanian Master of Mathematics Competition in Bucharest in February. At the competition, Yuhka competed as part of the UK team who placed 5th in the team competition with Russia taking the top spot, followed by Ukraine, USA and Bulgaria. Yuhka placed joint 43rd in the competition out of over 120 of the best young mathematicians in the world. More recently, Yuhka won a gold medal at the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad coming second overall (out of 195 contestants from 53 countries) with a fantastically strong score.

The sixteen-year-old also competed as part of the Millfield Mathematics Team, winning a place in the national final of the UK Mathematics Trust’s National Senior Team Maths Challenge.
